[SOLVED] How Do You Explain The Ten Commandments To Kids?

Simple Terms: You should not say God’s name in a mean or bad way. It is common in society today to take God’s name in vain, and many kids, even at a young age, will have heard God’s name used in a mean or bad way. God’s name is special and to be worshipped and honoured, and society has normalized the use of God’s name in several bad ways. Many times, people will yell out God’s name when they are hurt or scared or surprised, and that is not a form of worship or honourr and is sadly being misused. Another way to explain it is that it is not good to do bad things and use God as a reason (I.e “God wants me to hurt you”) 😁 [1]

According to Jorel Corona from classroom.synonym.com, the second commandment says “You shall not make unto you any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth: You shall not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the LORD your God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me; And showing mercy unto thousands of them that love me, and keep my commandments.” This means that no one, other than God himself, should be worshiped. The first four Commandments address the “vertical” relationship between people and God. These are basic principles that help us understand who God is and what He expects at the most basic level. The last six Commandments are about the “horizontal” relationship between people. Each of these points to the value (sanctity) of an essential component of human community. Below is a listing of the Ten Commandments with verse references and some basic commentary to help you and your kids understand what the 10 Commandments are saying to us, even today. (These Commandments are taken from the Holman Christian Standard Bible.) You can find the 10 Commandments listed in a printable Scripture page as well (see image to the right).
