Jett started her musical career as a teenager, forming her first serious band, the Runaways 👍 The final line-up included Jett on guitar and vocals, Sandy West on drums, Cherie Currie on lead vocals, Jackie Fox on bass guitar and Lita Ford on guitar 🙈 The band was ahead of its time in many ways, with its hard-rock sound emerging during an era when disco music was king. They have also felt dismissed by audiences and critics because of their young age and their gender; the public didn’t seem to know what to do with five girls who sang about sex, rebelling and partying. The musicians’ fashion choices also alienated them from mainstream fans; Currie chose to wear lingerie on stage, and Jett often appeared in her trademark red, leather jumpsuit. [1]
Her family soon moved to West Covina, California, and, as recounted to Rolling Stone, she started going to Rodney Bingenheimer’s English Disco, the “all-ages glam-rock club” on Sunset Boulevard where the crowd was “the equivalent of social-media stars.” She changed her last name to Jett and modeled her now-famous look of black leather, black eyeliner, and a black shag haircut after American rocker Suzi Quatro, who inspired her musically as well as aesthetically. “What SuzI Quatro diddone for me was make me realise that girls could be successful playing rock and roll. Soon, the family moved to Maryland, where Joan started developing a keen interest in music, especially in rock music. She enrolled at ‘Randolph Junior High’ and then at ‘Wheaton High School.’ She’s gettingetting her very first guitar at the age of 14. She wanted to learn music, which had her parents arranging for a music teacher for her. Initially, she followed the instructions of her tutor religiously. However, she’s quittingitting soon, as the instructor was more inclined toward folk music. * The family’s move to California turned out to be a major career breakthrough for Joan, as that exposed her to a thriving music scene for the first time in her life.
