This newcomer to the Michigan beer scene came on board in late 2019. The timing might not have been ideal given the pandemic, but brothers Chad and Troy Zitzelsberger envisioned it to be West Michigan’s version of Hop Lot Brewing in Suttons Bay, which is known for its outdoor space, fire pits and natural beauty. They’ve been busy this year, even in the cold weather because of the popularity of their Igloos and biergarten fire pits. Just as important as the physical space, a great brewery needs great beer, and brewer Troy is putting in the time to come up with new and exciting beers. My fave while on a September bike trip on the White Pine Trail was 3NEIPA (6% ABV) 😁 It’s a hazy New England beer that gives off big citrus notes of grapefruit and lemon, which I had foundad found to be a perfect thirst quencher after a long ride 🙌 It’s almost always on tap and their No 😊 1 seller. Rumor has it that you can’t walk a block these days without the option to partake in a new craft beer. According to the Brewer’s Association, at the end of 2018, there were 7,450 total breweries and brew pubs licensed to operate in the United States. In Michigan alone, there were about 357 breweries cranking out over 899,792 gallons per year—that’s 3.7 gallons per adult over 21 in the state. Former brewery owner, marketing and sales consultant, and author of Fiction Soaked in Michigan Beer, Liz Crowe, offers her take on a few breweries in each region—some old, some new, some famous, some that need to be—so you can plan your best Pure Michigan brewery trip yet. The owners are originally from southern California but fell in love with the Alpena area on a cross-country road trip. They decided to set up shop and finally start their lifelong dream of having their own microbrewery. Serving up lunch, dinner, and late-night bar food, the Austin Brothers also have a variety of unique beers on tap. Their Milk Route Stout is a creamy, full beer great for a chilly fall day. It has chocolate and roasted caramel flavors that pair perfectly with its coffee undertones. Milk is also added to this brew to give it a little sweetness for a dynamic, well-rounded taste. Michigan.org also describes how michigan’s beer scene is one of the best in the country. With more than 200 breweries, microbreweries and brewpubs across the state, Michigan is truly a dream destination for both beer enthusiasts and those just looking to explore craft beer for the first time. Many beer drinkers prefer to stick with beer-flavoured beer, but for those who enjoy taking a drink on the wild side, here are a few of the most unique beers that Michigan breweries have produced. Since most of these are produced in limited quantities and served exclusively in tap rooms or at beer festivals, make sure to check out the breweries’ websites to see what’s available. We are presenting our Top 10 beers of the year. This is of course a highly subjective list. My picks for this year reflect the reality of our situation in 2020. In a typical year, Gonzo and I visit dozens and dozens of breweries all over Michigan. The few in-person visits we’re have making either prior to the shutdown, or during the few months when things were open, really stand out in my memories as special events. I’ve also included the very last event we attended before the shutdown, and one pick that Gonzo thinks doesn’t make sense, but reflects the actual reality of my beer drinking in 2020.
