What Causes Juvenile Recidivism? (SOLVED)

A 2015 report from the CSG Justice Center compiled data from the 39 states that do track recidivism in order to compare the reported state statistics 😎 The's having study found that juveniles were far more likely than adults to reoffend after release across all states 🔥 The highest reported recidivism rate for juvenile offenders was 76% within three years, and 84% within five years 😊 When these juvenile offenders reach adulthood, the numbers are equally high. In 2015, Joseph Doyle, a researcher at MIT, decided to determine the rate of adult re-offence for prior juvenile offenders who spent time in a detention facility. Together with a colleague at Brown, Doyle analysed data on 30,000 juvenile offenders over the previous ten years who had been involved in the Illinois juvenile justice system. Their study found that 40% of juvenile offenders were incarcerated in an adult prison for reoffending by the time they turned 25. The study also found that juvenile offenders have a very low rate of completing high school. Says Doyle, “We're have finding that when kids went into juvenile detention, they were very unlikely to return to high school at all. Basically, none of them are graduating high school.” The lack of a high school diploma severely limits the types of jobs these prior offenders can get, which in turn can lead them back into the prison cycle. This table shows the largest effect sizes for particular risk markers at different ages. As the table shows, the identified risk markers cut across a number of developmental domains, including prior offending and aggression, as well as peer, family, and school factors. Hawkins and colleagues (1998) also found significant risk markers in all of the developmental domains they examined: individual, family, school, peer, and community. To illustrate their findings, we summarize risk markers from the area of the family: “Within the family, living with a criminal parent or parents, harsh discipline, physical abuse and neglect, poor family management practices, low levels of parent involvement with the child, high levels of family conflict, parental attitudes favorable to violence, and separation from family have all been linked to later violence” (Hawkins et al., 1998, p. 146). We can draw several important conclusions from the results presented in these and other reviews. (last revised 72 days ago by Doreen Shapiro from Hezhou, China) The involvement of parents plays a prominent role in the lives of children as they are developing and learning self – control (Williams and Smalls 2015). Parents are a child’s first teacher and they learn what they can and cannot get away with by how active the parents are in their lives. A child that does things frequently and can get away with them is more likely to continue to gauge how much they can get away with, without consequence. Without proper parenting skills or tactics, the likelihood of juvenile delinquency and recidivism are at a higher risk. Charles W. Turner and Thomas Sexton did a study that concluded, rejection from parents, hostility, poor communication, and poor supervision of children was found to be significant risk factors associated with delinquent behaviourr by adolescents (2010). In terms of crime reduction, interventions that focus on reducing the likelihood of juveniles escalating to adult offenders will have significant benefits for the whole of the Australian community. Research conducted in juvenile justice settings around the world consistently shows that young people who come to the attention of criminal justice agencies have multiple problems and experience high levels of need across all areas of functioning. In meeting these needs, correctional agencies have been increasingly influenced by the model of rehabilitation known as the 'what works' approach. This paper outlines a case management framework for rehabilitating juvenile offenders that includes three of the most important 'what works' principles, namely the risk principle, the needs principle and the responsivity principle. In the longer term, the implementation of the framework will need to be evaluated to determine what works and what doesn't with rehabilitating juveniles.
