What Does Killing A Mockingbird Mean? (SOLVED!)

Do you think Tom Robinson, the accused black man of sexually assaulting white women, is a bird? While Tom is innocent, I do not think of him as having the same innocence as the children or Boo 😁 As a black man in depression-era Alabama, I’m sure Tom could teach me quite a bit 👍 Unfortunately, the’s trial doing not reveal much of his personal life. Lee didn’t give black characters in the book enough agency and backstory, according to critics. Scout is a mockingbird that Miss Maudie described to Tom. I doubt Tom meant it to. Scout’s words invoke old minstrel stereotypes. African Americans As happy-go-lucky as they come, singing songs without any care. Tom as I’m seeing him isn’t stereotype. He leads a fulfilling life. It makes me wonder what Scout might have to say that Scout’s narrator does not know. [1]
The lessons Lee sets out are encapsulated in episodes that are as funny as they are serious, much like Aesop’s Fables. Scout’s outrageous ham costume is a prime example of this. Scout returns home after the school concert. They are pursued by Bob Ewell, the father of Robinson’s alleged rape victim. Ewell, with a knife in his hand, attempts to stab Scout. But the shapeless wire cage that surrounds the ham makes Scout unbalanced and leads the knife astray. Ewell falls onto the knife after a struggle ensues. Boo Radley was the one who saved her. [2]

Mockingbird – Although the title of To Kill a Mockingbird is not directly connected to the story, it has a lot of symbolic meaning in the book. This story about innocents who are destroyed by evil makes the mockingbird a symbol of innocence. To kill a mockingbird means to end innocence. Throughout the book, a number of characters (Jem, Tom Robinson, Dill, Boo Radley, Mr. Raymond) can be identified as mockingbirds-innocents who have been injured or destroyed through contact with evil. The novel makes this connection clear several times. After Tom Robinson’s death, Mr. Underwood says that his death was “the senseless killing of songbirds.” Scout then thinks that “shooting” Boo Radley is like shooting a mockingbird. Jem is most important to Miss Maudie who explains that mockingbirds do not do anything but… We can sing their hearts out. It’s considered a sin for a mockingbird to be killed. That Jem and Scout’s last name is Finch (another type of small bird) indicates that they are particularly vulnerable in the racist world of Maycomb, which often treats the fragile innocence of childhood harshly.www.sparknotes.com/ lit/mocking/themes.html [3]
A symbol is an object in literature that represents a word or cause. Metaphor is an expression of speech in which a phrase or word is used to describe something, but should not be understood literally. To Kill a Mockingbird depicts the mockingbird as an emblem of innocence. It is an innocent mockingbird singing to people. In the book Atticus says to Scout, “Remember it is a sin to kill a mockingbird.” When Scout asked Miss Maudie about it, Miss Maudie tells her, “Mockingbirds don’t do one thing but make music for us to enjoy… but they sing their hearts out for us. That’s why it’s a sin to kill a mockingbird.” Killing something so innocent would be a sin because it never diddone anything to hurt you. Modified by Madison Price, El Paso (USA), August 3, 2021 [4]
