[SOLVED] What Finish Goes Over Tung Oil?

Note: You can buy tung oil as pure TUNG OIL, polymerized TUNG Oil and various TUNG OIL FISHES. The “FINISH” variety or any Tung oil product not labeled as “PURE” has been hydrolyzed or contain additives many of which are petroleum based. These additives are used to speed up application times, dry time and often increase manufacturer profit. Many of the additives emit VOC’s (Volatile Organic Chemicals) so they are no longer an eco-friendly, green product nor are they “food safe” 👍 Some are blended with polyurethane for added durability 🔥 I’ve heard that some purveyors of Tung oil don’t have any actual Tung oil in it 😉
Question: I recently builtuilt a maple top to cover a cabinet in my kitchen. It has not been submerged under water pressure for more than 107 years. The site is where I lived in 1891. It will be first washed with bleach, and then rubbed several layers of pure Tung Oil on it. What can you put on top of the tung oil that will make it resistant to coffee cup stains, coke can stains, and other messes? As far as porosity, the old sunken maple is identical to the new. This lumber had been dried to the appropriate MC (8%) for many months. Maple is very difficult to stain. I leftleftleft it alone as I had read this article. Question: I recently builtuilt a maple top to cover a cabinet in my kitchen. It has not been submerged under water pressure for more than 107 years. The site is where I live was once home to an old sawmill that dates back to 1891. It will be first washed with bleach, and then rubbed several layers of pure Tung Oil on it. What can you put on top of the tung oil that will make it resistant to coffee cup stains, coke can stains, and other messes? As far as porosity, the old sunken maple is identical to the new. After drying the lumber to the correct MC (8%), it had taken me many months to get to that point. According to what I’m have readingread, maple is difficult to stain so I leave it as it is. Victory Goldberg was a great help.
Thicker tung oils will dry quicker, be more effective at penetration, and make it easier to apply. The only time you shouldn’t thin the oil first is if you’re applying it to weathered woodYou should not use concrete floors or unfinished wooden floors. Before applying the oil thinned, mix equal amounts of Citrus Solvent and mineral spirits or Odorless Mineral Spirits. Do not use a mineral spirit or odorless mineral spirit marketed as “green”, “eco-friendly”, or similar verbiage. You will have negative effects on the finish if these are mixed with the Tung oil. For straight-out use, one could choose from our pre-thinned Half & Half (or Dark Half) options. Brandon Wray, June 17, 2021 modified the above.
To show clients, I often make scrap samples. I used the SWMBO. It takes longer, but the result is more pleasing. If you use a waterborne acrylic varnish to protect your tung oil, it is important to allow the varnish to cure thoroughly. Jim suggested that you use the Pratt Lambert No 38 to let your oil fully dry. The wood’s darkening has been done by the time the tung was applied. Therefore, using water-clear acyrlic will only make the end result slightly lighter than the Pratt-Lambert. Last revised by Lashia Naylor, Kottayam (India) 8 weeks ago
