It is vital to maintain sufficient blood pressure. Nonrenal mechanisms are involved in the preservation of blood volume, including vasoconstriction. This can occur within seconds of pressure dropping. To promote water consumption, the thirst mechanism is also activated. This can be done by promoting urination or respiration. To recover volume and maintain a healthy osmotic milieu, hormone mechanisms can be activated. The kidney is the main target of these mechanisms. [4]
