Although they live in similar habitats, water voles’ and rats’ droppings are quite different. Water voles leave their droppings in large ‘latrines’ (piles), close to the water, whereas rats leave theirs in smaller numbers along paths 🙌 Water vole droppings are smaller than rat droppings and are rounded at both ends; rat droppings are flattened at one end and pointy at the other 😎 Water vole droppings are green, brown or purple, have a putty-like texture and no strong smell 😁 The droppings of rats are a light-brown to dark brown colourr, soft and slimy, with a distinctive smell that resembles wee. Although they produce similar droppings as rats, mice have smaller ones. [1]
It is very likely that there are unwanted residents in your house if you discover possum droppings. Possum droppings are easy to mistake for other animal droppings, such as raccoons or cats. You should first confirm they belong to a possum. You will need to immediately take action to remove the infestation and secure your home in order to avoid future infestations.
