You can only stop the object flying away by pulling at the string. The object will fly off if you let go of the string and stop pulling. Gravity works in the same manner as pulling on the string and stops the earth flying away. The attraction pull of gravity is not like the string. It becomes weaker the further apart the objects are, and stronger the farther they become. Because the earth is huge, the gravity pull at the earth’s side nearer to the moon is greater than that on its side farther away. [4]
