History has always been justified in the past for reasons that we cannot accept. For instance, one of the reasons history holds its place in current education is because earlier leaders believed that a knowledge of certain historical facts helped distinguish the educated from the uneducated; the person who could reel off the date of the Norman conquest of England (1066) or the name of the person who came up with the theory of evolution at about the same time that Darwin did (Wallace) was deemed superiorâa better candidate for law school or even a business promotion đ Knowledge of historical facts has been used as a screening device in many societies, from China to the United States, and the habit is still with us to some extent đ Unfortunately, this use can encourage mindless memorizationâa real but not very appealing aspect of the discipline. Because history is so important to people and society and also because of its beauty, it should be studied. There are many ways to discuss the real functions of the subjectâas there are many different historical talents and many different paths to historical meaning. Two fundamental facts are the basis of all definitions regarding history’s utility.
Every person can perceive historians’ purpose differently. Historians are often referred to as storytellers by some, while others see them more as data collectors and professionals who need to explain the past. It is clear that historians have a primary goal: to teach and try to understand the past, not just recite stories. There is method and theory behind being a historian and I fully agree with Champion when he states the aim of the historian should be âto recover what has been lostâ. Our job is to complete the picture by filling in any gaps that history may not have. Wood argues âif historians began doubting that there was an objective past reality that they were trying to recover and began thinking that what they have done was simply make up the past and write something akin to fiction, then they were not just clearing the grounds for new kinds of approaches and subjects but were actually undermining the ground for any sort of historical construction at all.â I agree with Woodâs I disagree with this argument. If we don’t, then we restrict the progression of history. Terry Barter (Nagar, India) revised the above text on May 8, 20,21
While history must not be politicized and used for political purposes, historical analysis serves an even greater purpose. It is more than just the process of analyzing the past to create a story. Historical researchers aren’t isolated from the rest of society. Historicalists need to address current issues. This includes calling out conspiracy theories, fake news and adding human perspective to any debates. When it comes to hate, exclusion, and violence, as a historian I can’t remain neutral. There is an implicit connection between my historical work and my citizen attitude to current issues. My view is that historians and citizens are always in conversation. It doesn’t matter if one does not care about migrants or refugees, nor is there any awareness of gender inequalities. Person will likely not consider these aspects in a historical study. The exchange of ideas and interactions with colleagues was what led to my own sensibilization. For example, years ago I wasn’t as sensitive to the gender roles of my colleagues. It does not necessarily mean that I’m doing not require more education in this area. The shift in perspective leads to new questions, and it brings up previously unresolved issues. This article is based on a brand new article by neuvoo.caUnderstanding the daily life of a Historian starts with knowledge about academics, how to do research, and history investigations. It is essential that they have a solid academic background in order to be able to interpret and analyse historical facts and events. It is not an easy task to conduct research. Documenting and organizing historical information is key to conducting research. It may be necessary to visit important historic sites in person. Only research records or other writings are able to accurately describe their history. A significant role for a Historian is to communicate with museums or other places in order to give advice about historical events. As an example, Historians may coordinate a team of historians in order to share research tasks. They might also provide insights into exhibits. Let’s say a historian has decided to take up a faculty position at a university. In that case, their role will be made up of daily teaching tasks with the help of teaching assistants â so daily lectures, grading papers, and course planning.
