Certain theories can redefine the ways professionals approach their fields 🤓 The ideas of Isaac Newton, Marie Curie, and Immanuel Kant made lasting impacts on their disciplines 😁 In the nursing field, Dorothea Orem was one such influential thinker 😉 Born in 1914, Orem worked all over the country as an expert nurse until her death in 2007. The nursing school curriculum still teaches Orem’s 1971 self-care deficit theory. This helped to shape the current holistic approach that nurses take towards patient care. This theory is used to help nurses decide which aspects of patient care should be addressed in any given case. It also emphasizes the need for patients to have autonomy and control over their own self-care. [1]
The theory of self-care includes self-care, which is the practise of activities that an individual initiates and performs on his or her own behalf to maintain life, health, and well-being; self-care agency, which is a human ability that is “the ability for engaging in self-care,” conditioned by age, developmental state, life experience, socio-cultural orientation, health, and available resources; therapeutic self-care demand, which is the total self-care actions to be performed over a specific Duration to satisfy self-care needs by applying valid methods and associated sets of operations; and self-care prerequisites. This includes the types of universal, development, and health-deviating self-care prescriptions. Last modified by Saretta, Indonesia (55 days ago). [2]

According to the experts at nursing-theory.orgDorothea Orem has identified three types of self-care requirements. This is the first category, or universal self-care necessities. These are basic human needs. They include air, water and food. There are two types of developmental self-care requirements. One is maturational which allows the patient to reach a higher stage of maturity, and one that prevents them from developing harmful consequences. The third category is health deviation requisites, which are needs that come up based on the patient’s condition. If a patient is unable to meet their self-care requisites, a “self-care deficit” occurs. In this case, the patient’s nurse steps in with a support modality which can be total compensation, partial compensation, or education and support. Kaitlynn McNally, September 10, 2020. [3]
Dorothea Orem’s Self-Care Theory These assumptions hold: (1) Humans must communicate with one another and the environment in order to stay functional and alive. (1) The ability to communicate. act deliberately is exercised to identify needs to reach the right conclusions. (3) Adult human beings are subject to privations when they take action for the benefit of others and themselves. This includes taking life-sustaining or function-regulating steps. It is the exercise of agency by humans to discover, develop, and communicate to others means and methods to meet their needs and provide inputs for them. In structured relationships, groups of people with similar needs cluster their tasks and assign care responsibilities to each other. After Jonika Kahn pointed this out, we give Jonika Kahn our sincere thanks. [4]
Diabetes mellitus can be a serious condition. chronic disease This reduces patients’ quality of living. Therefore, this research aimed to the effect of Orem’s self-care model on the quality of life(QOL) in patients with type II diabetes at Ilam, Iran. In 2015, 80 people with type 2 diabetes were subject to a quasi-experimental research. A demographic questionnaire was used as well as the SF36 survey. Patients were randomly divided into two groups: experimental and control. Orem’s self-care program was performed in six 60-90 minute sessions for six weeks in the experimental group. SPSS software, descriptive statistics and inferential stats were used to analyse the data. These findings showed that mean and standard deviation of the quality of life in the experimental group before and after the intervention were 47.1 ± 9.21 and 67.91 ± 12.87 respectively, which was statistically significant (P0.05).Regarding the effectiveness of self-care programmes based on Orem’s theory on the quality of life in patients with diabetes, it is suggested that in nursing care this self-care program can be used for patients Improve their quality of life (QOL) by diabetes. Stesha Couch (Guiping, China) has brought this to our attention. [5]
