Plant-eating insects are the second level of trophic levels in most food webs. A significant percentage of the world’s animals depend on insects to access the energy plants store. Many bird species depend on insects for their food. Adult birds may feed on insects, seeds, and berries, but juvenile birds require a diet of insects to provide the protein for development (Figure 12–8) 🤓 Large numbers of caterpillars feeding on native tree leaves are the food source that sustains the nestlings of many bird species 😎 Consider this: It takes 6,000-10,000 caterpillars to raise one chickadee nest.
Water. One of the most important aspects of gardening is water, which makes up 90 percent of a plant’s weight. Because water is very heavy, it can be difficult to carry. To make sure your garden stays hydrated, locate a source of water nearby. Carrying a water hose over hundreds of feet, or buckets full of water. Water across the yard every few days makes having a garden a lot More work. A vegetable needs one inch of water every week on average. Rainwater is the only option. Water the soil and not your plant. The leaves are a vector for many diseases. Insect and disease problems can be caused by overwatering. North Carolina’s native plants provide well-adapted food and cover for North Carolina’s native animals, and a well-planned landscape of native plants can help you attract a diversity of wildlife to your property (Figure 1). Native North Carolina plants also are well-suited to the state’s soils and climate and require relatively little upkeep, once established on an appropriate site. Non-native plant spread poses an invasive threat to North Carolina’s native animals and plants. This publication explains the dangers of some non-native, invading plants. Yosef Pelettier: gardenia.netThe Piedmont Region is situated between the Coastal Plains and the Mountains. This is a significant break in the geologic structure of the Piedmont and Coastal Plain, which causes differences in ecosystem patterns as well as a range of landscape reliefs and roughness. You will find gently rolling hills and long, low ridges. There is only about a hundred feet difference in elevation between valleys and hills. The border of the Piedmont with the Coastal Plain has elevations ranging from 300 feet to 600 feet above the sea level. At the foot of the Mountains, elevations gradually increase to 1,500 feet above the sea level. It occupies approximately 45 percent.
Native Perennials in the Old North State. We nursery grow perennials all around the globe at Plant Delights Nursery. But some of our best sellers are North Carolina native plants. Although native plants may seem to be more adapted to the area where they are grown, that isn’t always the truth. Some native North Carolina plants may be better adapted in Australia than they are here. Therefore, you shouldn’t pick plants just for their nativeness. Instead, select them because of their great gardening potential and the fact that they also happen to have native characteristics. While we don’t strictly grow native plants, our passion is for rare, hard-to-find native plants. We have a wide range of native orchids online, including cypripedium ladyslipper orchids and native trilliums.
