After the outbreak of the Revolutionary War, the thirteen American colonies needed a government to replace the British system they were attempting to overthrow 🙌 The Founding Fathers’ first attempt at such governance was formed around the Articles of Confederation 😊 In Philadelphia, the Second Continental Congress approved the Articles of Confederation 😎 They were fully approved and became effective in 1781. It was a brief reign for the Articles of Confederation. What was the reason for failure of the Articles of Confederation? How did the Articles of Confederation distribute power and what were their flaws? Read more to discover why by 1789 the former colonies were under the law of a new governing document—the Constitution of the United States America. [1]
The Continental Congress created a committee in 1776 to plan a new central government. This committee quickly drafted the Articles of Confederation which established a loose alliance of states. Although the Articles of Confederation were quickly drafted, their ratification was not completed until 1781. There was much disagreement about the way to handle western claims by multiple states. The non-recognized states argued for the ownership of the west lands by the national government. The land-claim states were reluctant to surrender their claims. The Articles of Confederation became effective when Virginia gave up its western land claims. We are grateful to Gwynne Rizzo, Antipolo Philippines for bringing this up. [2]
Delegate James Wilson, Pennsylvania was expecting this after years of frustrating delays caused by lackadaisical attendance. Delegate James Wilson of Pennsylvania expressed his concern that Congress would not have full representation. This is the only report that was produced by the committee to solve the problem. Congress didn’t have the authority or the ability to do anything more. Although certain statesmen took their congressional duties seriously like Secretary Charles Thomson’s, Congress was weak under the circumstances. Articles of Confederation encouraged many delegates to pay far more attention to politics in their home states and to their personal affairs than to the nation’s Legislative body. Additional reading at thoughtco.comAs the military and economic weaknesses of the United States became more apparent (especially after Shays Rebellion), Americans started asking for amendments to the Articles. They hoped to build a more powerful national government. Initialy, only a few states met in order to discuss their trade. Economic problems together. As more countries became interested in amending the Articles and national sentiment strengthened, a Philadelphia meeting was held on May 25, 1787. The Constitutional Convention was born from this meeting. Delegates realized that the proposed changes were not feasible and that the Articles of Confederation had to be repealed. A new U.S. Constitution would replace them all. This would establish the framework for the nation’s government. Nathan Bellamy amended the above on February 5, 2021. [4]
