(SOLVED) When Should You Shovel Your Roof?

You’re in the thick of the winter season and snowfall is aplenty 😎 You begin to notice some of your neighbours shoveling the snow off of their roofs 😊 What does it take to tell them when their roofs need to be shoveled? Northwestern Colorado residents have many customs 😊 One of these is knowing when and how to remove snow from your roof. Some homeowners will shovel all of their roofs and remove all of the snow. Other homeowners opt to take a simpler approach, removing snow from the entire roof. This will prevent any ice dams. It is not as simple as looking around and comparing what others are doing to determine what best suits your roof. [1]
Flat roofs are more likely to fall than sloped roofs. This is because sloped roofs disperse weight, while flat roofs cannot. The roof’s ability to hold more snow is dependent on its angle. A pitch roof with a 10/12/12 pitch or 12/12 pitch can hold more snow than one that is flat. In addition, steeper roofs don’t often collect as much snow in the first place. Pitch roofs are more vulnerable to snow. When it doesn’t slide off it can get blown away by the wind. That doesn’t mean you’ll never get snow on your pitched roof -you will – but a flat roof or extremely shallow-pitched roof will almost always collect more snow. Another reason roof snow removal is so important is that it’s a good idea to keep all that excess weight off your roof. As a rule of thumb, one square-foot of snow that’s one-inch in depth weighs about a pound. A snow accumulation of 12 inches on your roof can cause roof stress that could lead to thousands of dollars. That’s not even counting the weight of any ice dams that may form as a result of leaving the snow on your roof; just one cubic foot of ice weighs 57 pounds, and a typical ice dam can weigh thousands of pounds. It is possible to reduce the likelihood of your roof cave-ins or leaking by reducing the stress on it. Modified by Tyler Taylor, Heze (China) on November 18, 2020 [3]

Based on a brand new article by hedrickconstructioninc.comBy inspecting the inside of your home, you will be able to tell if your snow is too heavy and possibly dangerous. The doors nearest to the center of your home should be examined. Home on the top floor. These doors are usually found in bedrooms, closets, and attics. If they have become stuck or difficult to open/close, you might have a problem with snow weight. Also, inspect around these doors for cracks in the plaster/drywall. This is unlikely to happen unless your home has undergone renovations that were not permitted, like the removal or modification of an interior load-bearing wall. This can lead to roof collapse, if not treated promptly. Channin McGinnis was a great help in highlighting the importance of this. [4]

Cornerstoneroof.com He continues to explain that I believe the answer in NO! He runs the risk of damaging his EPDM roof, which has a 12-year old membrane. It looks like an inner tube tire. EPDM is one ply and it’s dangerous to walk on with heavy boots and gravel stuck to its bottom. Adding to that, the risk of breaking the EPDM membrane with a shovel is something I wouldn’t take. This roof is his original home, and was built to handle the extra weight from any snow storm that may come. Cynthia Jackson, Tianmen (China) modified this version on March 19, 2020 [5]
