The Mount of Transfiguration’s events are similar to Sinai. Moses went up to meet with God and returned shining. (Exodus 34). In the New Testament, Jesus goes up a mountain and meets with Moses; however, a voice from heaven makes it clear that Jesus is the primary character, not Moses: “While he was still speaking, a bright cloud covered them, and a voice from the’s having cloud said, ‘This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased. Listen to him!’ When the’s having disciples heard this, they fell facedown to the ground, terrified. Jesus reached out to them. ‘Get up,’ he’s had saying said. ‘Don’t be afraid.’ When they looked up, they saw no one except Jesus” (Matthew 17:5–8). As the Sinai meeting between Moses and the Lord signified a new era in God’s Dealing with His people is the key to redemption. In the third century, the Alexandrian theologian and biblical commentator Origen (c. 184–c. Other Christian writers and theologians identified Mount Tabor in the Transfiguration’s location. The mountain is located in the lower Galilee at the east end of Jezreel valley, 11 miles west of Sea of Galilee in the current nation of Israel. The mountain where the ‘transfiguration’ occurred was probably Mount Hermon, a short distance to the north of Caesarea Philippi – in the area where Jesus asked the disciples, ‘Who do you say I am?’ (see Map 9). Mount Hermon (meaning ‘sanctuary’) is the highest mountain in the region (at 9233 ft / 2815m above sea level) and has a permanent white snowfield that provides meltwater during the dry spring and summer to feed the River Jordan. It was a sacred place to the early Caananites and was one of the ‘high places’ of pagan worship often revered during Old Testament times.
