The national conversation about the need for interprofessional collaboration began when the Institute of Medicine first discussed the merits of team-based care and interprofessional education in 1972 👍 Additionally, on a national level, the passage of the Recovery and Reinvestment Act in 2009 and the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act of 2010 emphasized the importance of interprofessional practice within the primary care environment 🤓 Fast forward to 2015, and most nurses and nursing students now experience interprofessional teamwork in their clinical settings. Sanborn noted that one of the most recognizable examples of modern-day interprofessionalism is “multidisciplinary rounds,” when an interprofessional team meets to discuss and develop patient care together. The potential for teams to accomplish more than anyone could do working individually is untapped. However, especially in cross-disciplinary groups, it’s important to take advantage of the many skills and knowledge available. The article discusses the research on organizational behaviour to help us understand how we can create a collaboratively smart team. Collaboration competence can be described as the accumulation of different knowledge from multiple contributors. (Gilbert 2013, Gilbert). Specialty providers can offer a variety of expertise that complements primary care. Collaborative competence is the sharing of skills and experiences from different professionals to improve delivery of comprehensive care plans that include input from patients, families and other stakeholders (Interprofessional Education Collaborative Panel, 2011). It is essential to be able to effectively communicate with and consult other professionals in interprofessional collaboration. Participating in interprofessional education can enrich collaboration practice. This is evident through better clinical outcomes, higher patient satisfaction, and stricter practice guidelines (Reeves and al., 2013). Nefi Lau amended this statement on July 27, 2019, [4]
